Leroy Jethro Gibbs was born in 1958 in the small rural town of Stillwater, Pennsylvania. His father is Jackson Gibbs, who named him after his business partner Leroy Jethro. He attended Marine Corps Recruiting Depot (MCRD) Parris Island in South Carolina. His likely first assignment was as an MP at Camp LeJeune. Sometime during that tour he was selected for or applied for sniper training, which he completed. His weapon was the Marine M-40A1 Sniper Rifle with hand-loaded Lapua 308 boat tail, full metal jacket, and molybdenum (or "moly")-coated rounds. After training, he participated in Operation: Just Cause in 1989 and Operation: Desert Storm in 1991 where he served under the command of Colonel William Ryan and Colonel Ryan's executive officer, Lieutenant Cameron. Lieutenant Cameron died in Gibbs' arms after being mortally wounded in an engagement. Gunnery Sergeant Gibbs was severely wounded in Desert Storm and spent 19 days in a coma as a result.

Gibbs has been married four times and divorced three times his first marriage Gibbs met his first wife, Shannon, while waiting at the Stillwater Train Platform in 1976. Shannon, along with their eight-year-old daughter Kelly were murdered by a Mexican drug dealer on the last official day of Operation Desert Storm February 28, 1991 Gibbs had been an active member of the Marine Corps at the time and was still overseas when they were killed. Gibbs later killed the drug dealer responsible for their deaths. One of his wives, Diane, later married Gibbs' friend FBI Senior Special Agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano); Fornell later admitted to Gibbs that the marriage was a mistake. married Ginger Stevenson then got a divorce His wife Stephanie Flynn lived with him during his service in Moscow, Russia for about a year. Each wife was a redhead, like Shannon. Gibbs also once had a romantic relationship with the director of NCIS, Jenny Shepard, who was also a redhead. In the first, second, and once during the third season, he was seen in the company of a mysterious redheaded woman. In season four, he had a steady, serious relationship and married Army CID agent Lt. Col. Hollis Mann After Shannon's and Kelly's death and before he remarried to his second wife, Gibbs had an affair with a woman in Colombia, named Rose.

 Mark Harmon was born September 2nd 1951 in Burbank California. Mark was born and raised in Southern California, where he attended UCLA and was a quarterback for the UCLA football. He was awarded the National Collegiate Football Foundation Award for All-Around Excellence. He is a cum laude graduate of UCLA with a degree in communications. He worked as a carpenter before making a success of his acting career.

They have two sons Sean Thomas Harmon born 25 April 1988, and Ty Christian Harmon born June 25, 1992 mark His father Tom Harmon was University of Michigan football All-America and Heisman Trophy winner . His mother is actress and artist Elyse Knox two older sisters actress and painter Kristin Nelson,and actress Kelly Harmon.
